Fatma’s Update: Done with Surgery & Discharged from Hospital

Fatma Update, Cairo, September 2014

Fatma, who is now 22, was abused by her husband when she was 18. He came home one day, under the influence of drugs, and simply threw Fatma from the third floor of their building. He did not even call for help to save her;  he just picked her up and carried her back upstairs. After this he locked her up for an additional three days before anyone found out and she could be saved.

As a result of this horrific incident Fatma’s back was broken meaning that she will never be able to walk again. For the past 4 years Fatma could either sit down or lay down, her body doesn’t allow her to do anything else. Whatever she chose to do she was in incredible pain.

That was Fatma’s life before El Alsson got involved.

Since we took Fatma under our wing we have managed to purchase an infusion pump for Fatma, a programmable system that stores and delivers pain medication into the intrathecal space. The pump is connected to a thin, flexible catheter, which is implanted under the skin. This has enabled Fatma to sit and sleep comfortably, without pain.

Nevertheless, this pump requires injecting baclofen every three months (1200 LE) for the rest of her life or until a medical breakthrough takes place. Fatma is a fighter and a survivor and with our help, support and prayers, she will manage to get this injection on time, God willing.

Special recognition to her doctors who have performed this surgery free of charge. We only had to pay for the hospital stay, pump and a baclofen dose. She had her surgery done at the Neuro Spine Hospital. The total cost that we had to bear was 68.000 LE out of which 45.000 LE were fully raised by El Alsson Community.

A big thank you to the El Alsson Community, our students, parents and staff, for their efforts in fundraising for Fatma’s operation. You truly do ‘change lives’
